What Events Triggered It?
In March 1973, James McCord wrote a letter to Sirica, claiming that he was under political pressure to plead guilty. McCord's letter helped to elevate the affair into a more of a political scandal. It was caused because the men that were working on President Nixon's behalf were caught after breaking in to a room in the Watergate Hotel in Washington DC on the night of May 8th where the Democratic Party had records used in campaigning against Nixon. This scandal was based mostly on how much Nixon knew about this break-in and when he knew about it. Nixon clearly wanted to do what he could to cover up his involvement in this scandal. When Richard Nixon was President, there was a group of 10 people that called themselves 'The Committee to RE-Elect the President', or 'CREEP'. This group was trying to keep Nixon in office for another term by using legal and illegal methods, and cheating. The most famous illegal one was the Watergate Scandal.
